--- just a quick sketch, but it captured my mental image pretty well so i though i'd upload it on its own. i'm really digging the mood in this one. what do you guys think?

--- thinking i might take it to a more polished level and enter it into the "train your brain" contest here on DA, whaddaya think?

--- also, the name is - sort of - a shout out to Homestuck, yes. ;p

I can very much see why this is one of your most popular pictures, even though not as refined as some others, but definately very captivating. I can't think of anything new to add that hasn't been said yet. :)

I think this way it gives off more a chaotic feeling which is what I'd expect to find in such place

(Dunno if sarcasm or not ._.)
yeah...but..not just because the titles are nearly the same XD
The Descent - it's actually a horror movie about a unexplored cave and the last scene is the main character fully exhausted in front of a torch in the middle of rock cliff.. that's not the same as the stairs but similar i think O.o

Yeah I would have liked it anyway xD

Woah, that is creepily cool. For a quick sketch, it's pretty awesome! You SHOULD enter this into a contest, I think it'd win. I love the way you captured the angle of the lighting and especially how it dissolves into fire sort of at the end. It reminds me of what I imagine the staircase to Hades might be like.

I love the intense mood the reds provide. It reminds me of some of the end game environments in Oblivion crossed with Dark Souls blighttown with all the rickety wood platforms.
I like the composition a lot, it's a descent into madness! Or maybe lava, either way I wouldn't want to go there.

Well my first thought is that it looks like the staircase from Diablo 3 in Act 3. The area where you have to descend further to get to the Sin Heart and eventually the core of the mountain to defeat Azmodan.

Now what I see is a further descent into hell or mandess like the others. As one travels slowly down this winding staircase of blood, flesh, muscly sinew the walls begin to pulse and tighten around them. It gives a sense of paranoia, of being trapped. The anxiety of the next step keeps repeating in their mind, "Should I take another? Should I try to go back? I've already started, so should I just keep going?"

As they get far enough down the light will begin to hum and hiss at the same time. In a way it's calling to you, begging you to come closer, enveloping you into a false sense of security. If you keep moving your legs then some reward will be waiting at the bottom. But there's also a tinge of sinister delight in it, a slight skitter or slither that's barely audible, that's a precursor for what really lies ahead.

Do you notice how at the end of the journey the stairs turn more into a cliff than steps? That's to ensure that once on the bottom level you'll have to claw at the walls to try to bet back on the ascension to clarity. Once you're all the way down it's very hard to get back up, that's assuming the creatures of the light don't pounce and drag you away.

You could make it a bit more 'clear' just to show what you really want to show. But other than that, enter the dA Contest!

My first thought was the stair case from Anastasia during the Rasputin song.

Looks pretty eerie.
