I gotta pick your brain on this one a little bit. Is it meant to kinda look..."out of focus" a bit? I know its a digital painting, but it has a look as though if it were a photograph of the landscape the camera was shaky or out of focus. My guess is that might be to give it a kind of sens of inertia or movement?
Don't worry Rachel, you can do environment if you like. All art is built on the same fundamental laws of visual perception, so as you draw more you will come to better understand form, and light, which sometimes manifests as color the way it reaches our eyes. Observe these long enough and you'll develop an intuitive sense of understanding for values. As for perspective, aside from eye-level, I think it is better intuitively understood than academically - through graphic perspective, blech.
I dunno. I just don't think I have an eye for it nor the passion. Maybe you're right though and it'll take time and practice. The way you talk about it is clear you do have a passion for it. Sorry for not having a witty response to it I'm kinda spacey lately. I really do appreciate your well written reply though.
