--- a photo-study, digital landscape painting, with many thanks to the generous...
--- for allowing me to use their beautiful gallery. it's high-time i started doing some landscape paintings - i'm not at all happy with my current skill level for this sort of thing so expect many more of these from me. done in ~ 45m.
here's the original photo:
EDIT: as a side-note if you're interested in critiquing me, please avoid telling me to 'include more detail'. this is a speed painting and i limit myself to 45 minutes intentionally. i promise you that i am busting my ass to get all of the details i can in that amount of time.
Attempt # 2 at writing this critique (my computer decided to delete the first one.)
I'm not going to lie, this picture is amazing, the detail that went into it just blows my mind. This being a critique, however, I'm not going to sit here and go on and on about how great it is.
First... the things that need some work...
The bottom left corner, while there was a dark indent into the mountain, it wasn't as extreme as you made it, and the way the colors run down to the bottom of the picture, it makes me feel like you were imitating the movie Pagemaster (1994). It's a great movie, but I'm fairly certain that that was not what you were trying to go after with this picture.
In parts of the hills, a "feather" effect might've been better, because the sharp edges of things such as the trees under the sun wouldn't look as amazingly clear as they do in your piece, just like the blue in the back hills, it blends just a little more (though you don't really notice it at first glance.)
For a forty-five minute project this really did turn out great. There were a lot of things that I really liked about this picture. The fact that the sun looks like it is cry (perhaps you should've used a more blue sense for the water than the white of the snow), the wonderful clouds, and mist over the hills.
And the WATER! The river is simply amazing. You can almost feel the movement through the picture. It would've taken me HOURS to get the detail that you did for the water! It really looks like it is or could be moving!
Overall, great job on the picture, and the detail you got in in forty-five minutes just blows my mind!
